This waterproof Legionella testing thermometer kit can be used to measure the temperature of both standing water and the surface of pipes and tanks that are part of the water system. The penetration probe can also be used to take the temperature of mains water.

The immersion probe should be inserted at least 25mm into the water; the ribbon probe can be used to take the temperature of pipes and tanks, and the wire probe can be used to measure hard-to-reach places or where the other probes are not suitable. This kit is supplied with a traceable calibration certificate.

An incorrect water temperature is a significant risk factor for the growth of Legionella. Legionella bacteria multiply in water at temperatures between 20 and 45 °C, especially if nutrients are present, such as scale, rust, sludge, or algae. A common method to prevent this is to keep cold water below 20 °C. Hot water should be stored above 60 °C and distributed above 50 °C.

Under current legislation, as an employer or someone in control of premises, you are responsible for carrying out a risk assessment. The revised approved code of practice (ACOP) from the UK's Health and Safety Executive (HSE) significantly expands the scope of guidance for controlling Legionella bacteria in water.

The code now applies to all hot and cold water systems in the workplace, regardless of their capacity. The previous lower limit of 300 litres used to exclude domestic systems is therefore no longer applicable. While domestic systems can pose a risk, the code only applies to risks arising from work activities.

This means that all employers managing premises with hot/cold water systems and/or a wet cooling system are legally obliged to identify and prevent or control any risk of contamination.
